Adapters

(english) Steel segments that are bolted to the reel mandrel to increase their diameter so that large (24" ID) coils can be run.

Composting

(Environmental Engineering) The controlled aerobic degradation of organic wastes into a material which can be used for landscaping, landfill cover, or soil conditioning.

Brazing

(english) Joining metals by fusion of nonferrous alloys that have melting points above 800 F (425C), but lower than those of the metals being joined. May be accomplished by a torch. Filler metal is ordinarily in rod form in torch brazing; whereas in furnace and dip brazing the work material is first assembled and the filler metal may then be applied as wire, washers, clips, bands, or may be bonded, as in brazing sheet.

Zirconia

(english) ZrO2 an acid refractory up to 2500 B0C (4532 B0F) having good thermal shock resistance and low electrical resistively.

Influent

(Environmental Engineering) The fluid entering a system, process, tank, etc. An effluent from one process can be an influent to another process. See effluent.

Bed-In

(english) Method whereby drag may be rammed in the pit or flask without necessity of rolling over. Process used in production of heavy castings.

In situ treatment

(Environmental Engineering) Treatment of a waste in place, as opposed to pumping or digging the waste up and then treating it.

Burnt Rubber

(english) Small or large black spots that generally show up on surface and are generally caused by pickling steel too hot.

Nonpoint source pollution (NPSP)

(Environmental Engineering) Any pollution from a source which cannot be attributed to a particular discharge point, e.g. from agricultural crops, city streets, construction sites, etc.

Vaporproof

(Concrete Engineering) A material that is totally immune to the passage of a gas under pressure. Any material that is truly vaporproof will inherently be waterproof.

Synergism is the act of working together

(Environmental Engineering) Two chemicals which are synergistic have a greater effect together than the sum of their individual effects. The effect can be either positive or negative.

Construction Joint

(Concrete Engineering) The contact between the placed concrete and concrete surfaces, against or upon which concrete is to be placed and to which new concrete is to adhere, that has become so rigid that the new concrete cannot be incorporated integrally by vibration with that previously placed. Unformed construction joints are horizontally placed or nearly so.
