Dump

(Environmental Engineering) An illegal and uncontrolled area where wastes have been placed on or in the ground. See Landfill.

System

(Environmental Engineering) An arbitrarily defined area or volume surrounded by a boundary and possessing specific inputs, outputs, and reactions.

Bearing Strength

(english) The maximum bearing load at failure divided by the effective bearing area. In a pinned or riveted joint, the iffective area is calculated as the product of the diameter of the hole and the thickness of the bearing member.

Precast

(Concrete Engineering) A concrete unit, structure or member that is cast and cured in an area other than its final position or place.

Base Box

(english) Unit of area of 112 sheets of tin mil products (tin plate, tin free steel or black plate) 14 by 20 inches, or 31,360 square inches. Tin Plate is sold, and carried in finished inventory, on a weight per unit area rather than on a thickness basis.

Big Winch

(english) The tool used to spot (or position) the rail cars for unloading. It is located on the north end of the unloading area.

Distributed load:

(english) An external force which acts over a region of length, surface, or area: essentially any external force which is not a concentrated force.

Wagner Fineness

(Concrete Engineering) The fineness of materials such as portland cement expressed as total surface area in centimeters per gram as determined by the Wagner turbidimeter apparatus and procedure.

Baller Stick

(english) Octagon-shaped wooden stick approximately 5' long. This stick is used in the baller area, to change burr mashers, to start a coil with a large ID, etc.

Ecosystem

(Environmental Engineering) An organism or group of organisms and their surroundings. The boundary of an ecosystem may be arbitrarily chosen to suit the area of interest or study.

Stress:

(english) The intensity of internal force acting at a point in an object. Stress is measured in units of force per area. See shear stress and normal stress.

Blaine Fineness

(Concrete Engineering) The fineness of granular materials such as cement and pozzolan, expressed as total surface area in square centimeters per gram, determined by the Blaine air-permeability apparatus and procedure.
