Builtup Plate

(english) "A pattern plate of suitable material, with the cope pattern mounted on or attached to one side; the drag pattern may be attached to the other side or to a separate mounting. See Matchplate "

Hindered (Zone) settling

(Environmental Engineering) Settling in which particle concentrations are sufficient that particles interfere with the settling of other particles. Particles settle together as a body or structure with the water required to traverse the particle interstices.

Keene's Cement

(Concrete Engineering) A finely ground high density plaster composed of anhydrous, (calcined or "dead burned") gypsum, the set of which is accelerated by the addition of other materials.

Temper

(Concrete Engineering) The addition of water to the cement mix whether at the batch plant, during transit or at the jobsite to achieve the specified water to cement ratio.

Climatology

(Environmental Engineering) The study of the climate, how the earth's atmosphere performs over long periods of time.

Base

(english) The steel or concrete pedestal on which the coils are stacked during the batch annealing process.

Inertial Force:

(english) A fictitious force used for convenience in visualizing the effects of forces on bodies in motion. For an accelerating body, the inertial force is considered as a body force whose resultant acts at the object's center of gravity in a direction opposite the acceleration. The magnitude of the force is the mass of the object times the magnitude of the acceleration.

Rotation:

(english) Motion of an object where the path of every point is a circle or circular arc. A rotation is defined by a point and vector which determine the axis of rotation. The direction of the vector is the direction of the axis and the magnitude of the vector is the angle of rotation.

Chair(s)

(Concrete Engineering) In concrete formwork, the support for the reinforcing steel.

Mass balance

(Environmental Engineering) An organized accounting of all inputs and outputs to an arbitrary but defined system. Stated in other terms, the rate of mass accumulation within a system is equal to the rate of mass input less the rate of mass output plus the rate of mass generation within the system.

Base Metal

(english) (1) The metal present in the largest proportion in an alloy; (2) the metal to be brazed, cut or welded; (3) after welding the part of the metal that was not melted during the process.
