Secondary standards

(Environmental Engineering) Recommended drinking water quality standards which relate to aesthetics and/or health. These standards are recommended, not required. See primary standards.

Bloom 2

(english) A semi-finished hot rolled product, rectangular in cross section, produced on a blooming mill. For iron and steel, the width is not more than twice the thickness, and the cross-sectional area is usually not less than 36 sq. in. Iron and steel blooms are sometimes made by forging.

Entrapped Air

(Concrete Engineering) Air in concrete which is not purposely en-trained, Entrapped air bubbles are normally much larger and more irregular than entrained air bubbles.

Distributed load:

(english) An external force which acts over a region of length, surface, or area: essentially any external force which is not a concentrated force.

Synergism is the act of working together

(Environmental Engineering) Two chemicals which are synergistic have a greater effect together than the sum of their individual effects. The effect can be either positive or negative.

Compression settling

(Environmental Engineering) Settling which occurs in the lower reaches of clarifiers where particle concentrations are highest. Particles can settle only by compressing the mass of particles below.

Retempering

(Concrete Engineering) The addition of water and remixing of concrete which has started to stiffen: usually not allowed as it may affect the ultimate strength.

Stability:

(english) Stability is best defined as the opposite of instability, which is the occurrence of large structural deformations which are not the result of material failure.

Work flow

(Software Engineering) the sequence of tasks that are required to accomplish some activity or action; often (but not always) used in conjunction with software process models

Weak acid

(Environmental Engineering) An acid that does not ionize completely under the conditions of interest. Examples include acetic acid, carbonic acid, and hypochlorous acid. See strong acid.

Denitrification

(Environmental Engineering) The anoxic biological conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas. It occurs naturally in surface waters low in oxygen, and it can be engineered in wastewater treatment systems.

Force:

(english) A directed interaction between two objects that tends to change the momentum of both.Since a force has both direction and magnitude, it can be expressed as a vector
