Stress:

(english) The intensity of internal force acting at a point in an object. Stress is measured in units of force per area. See shear stress and normal stress.

Shear strain:

(english) Strain measuring the intensity of racking in the material. Shear strain is measured as the change in angle of the corners of a small square of material.

Cell

(Environmental Engineering) A unit of varying dimensions in a landfill which is isolated from the environment by 6 to 12 inches of soil cover. A cell is one day's waste or less. A cell is covered with soil at the end of each day.

Brown Sharp Gages

(english) A standard series of sizes refered to by numbers, in which the diameter of wire or thickness of sheet metal is generally produced and which is used in the manufacture of brass, bronze, copper, copper-base alloys and aluminum. These gage numbers have a definite relationship to each other. In this system, the decimal thickness is reduced by 50% every six gage numbers- while temper is expressed by the number of B&S gage numbers as cold reduced in thickness from previous annealing. For each B&S gage number in thickness reduction, where is assigned a hardness value of 1/4 hard.

Funicular:

(english) A funicular shape is one similar to that taken by a suspended chain or string subjected to a particular loading.

Degree of Freedom:

(english) A displacement quantity which defines the shape and location of an object. In the two dimensional plane, a rigid object has three degrees of freedom: two translations and one rotation. In three dimensional space, a rigid object has six degrees of freedom (three translations and three rotations).

Bottom Roll

(english) Submerged roll in the pot used to keep the strip submerged in the pot.

Potential Energy:

(english) The energy stored in a raised object (e.g. the weights in a grandfather clock). Potential energy equals mgh, where m is mass, g is the acceleration of gravity, and h is the vertical distance from a reference location. It is called potential energy because the energy can be regained when the object is lowered. This type of potential energy is sometimes called gravitational potential energy in order to distinguish it from elastic potential energy: see elastic energy.

Baller Stick

(english) Octagon-shaped wooden stick approximately 5' long. This stick is used in the baller area, to change burr mashers, to start a coil with a large ID, etc.

Bessemer Process

(english) A process for making steel by blowing air through molten pig iron contained in a refractory lined vessel so that the impurities are thus removed by oxidation.

Boron (chemical symbol B)

(english) Element N. 5 of the periodic system. Atomic weight 10.82. It is gray in color, ignites at about 1112 (degrees) F. and burns with a brilliant green flame, but its melting point in a non-oxidizing atmosphere is about 4000 (degrees) F. Boron is used in steel in minute quantities for one purpose only- to increase the hardenability as in case hardening and to increase strength and hardness penetration.

Pining

(Concrete Engineering) Development of relatively small cavities in a concrete surface, due to phenomena such as cavitation or corrosion.
