Screen (or Sieve)

(Concrete Engineering) A metallic sheet or plate, woven wire cloth, or similar device, with regularly spaced openings of uniform size, mounted in a suitable frame or holder for use in separating material according to size.

Blast Cleaning (blasting)

(english) A process for cleaning or finishing metal objects by use of an air jet or centrifugal wheel that propels abrasive particles (grit, sand, or shot) against the surfaces of the workpiece at high velocity.

Potential Energy:

(english) The energy stored in a raised object (e.g. the weights in a grandfather clock). Potential energy equals mgh, where m is mass, g is the acceleration of gravity, and h is the vertical distance from a reference location. It is called potential energy because the energy can be regained when the object is lowered. This type of potential energy is sometimes called gravitational potential energy in order to distinguish it from elastic potential energy: see elastic energy.

Acid Process 1

(english) A process of making steel, either Bessemer, open-hearth or electric, in which the furnace is lined with a siliceous refractory and for which low phosphorus pig iron is required as this element is not removed.

BETA RATIO (#)

(english) The amount, expressed as a ratio, of particles in a fluid stream upstream of a filter, after the fluid posses through a filter, divided by the amount of particles downstream, for a particular size particle.

Butcher Saw Steel

(english) A hardened, tempered, and polished high carbon spring steel strip material (carbon content is generally higher than that of a material used for wood band saw applications) with a Rockwell value of roughly C47/49.

Acid-Process

(english) A process of making steel, either Bessemer, open-hearth or electric, in which the furnace is lined with a siliceous refractory and for which low phosphorus pig iron is required as this element is not removed.

Structural model:

(english) An idealization for analysis purposes of a real or conceived structure. A structural model includes boundaries limiting the scope of the analysis. Supports occur at these boundaries, representing things which hold the structure in place.

Slump Cone

(Concrete Engineering) A metal mold in the form of a truncated cone with a top diameter of 4”, a bottom diameter of 8”, and a height of 12”, used to fabricate the specimen for a slump test.

Autotrophic

(Environmental Engineering) Organisms which utilize inorganic carbon for synthesis of protoplasm. Ecologists narrow the definition further by requiring that autotrophs obtain their energy from the sun. In microbiologist parlance, this would be a photoautotroph. See photoautotrophic and chemoautotrophic.

Cement, Portland (ASTM C150) (Concrete Engineering)

A powdery substance made by burning, at a high temperature, a mixture of clay and limestone producing lumps called “clinkers” which are ground into a fine powder consisting of hydraulic calcium silicates. For non-portland cements, see aluminous cement.

Back-up Roll

(english) 1) Roll used as a support roll mainly for plater rolls. 2) Two rolls, one on top and one on bottom of the two work rolls which apply pressure and reduce the flexing of the work rolls.
