(english) A valve that may be used to divert the flow of fluid in a passage. Most normally configured in a two-way pattern that is either open or closed.
(Concrete Engineering) Moisture which is mechanically held in a material. In aggregates, that water which is not available to become part of the mixing water is designated "absorbed" water.
(english) A defect in metal, on or near the surface, resulting from the expansion of gas in a subsurface zone. Very small blisters are called pinheads or pepper blisters.
(Environmental Engineering) A reactor in which the microorganisms are suspended in the wastewater. Examples of suspended growth reactors are activated sludge reactors and anaerobic digesters. See attached growth reactor.
(english) Motion of an object where the path of every point is a circle or circular arc. A rotation is defined by a point and vector which determine the axis of rotation. The direction of the vector is the direction of the axis and the magnitude of the vector is the angle of rotation.
(Concrete Engineering) A hydraulic cement in which the principal constituents are calcium aluminates, instead of calcium silicates which comprise the major ingredients of portland cement. (See calcium aluminate cement)
(english) Heating hot rolled ferrous sheet in an open furnace to a temperature within the transformation range and then cooling in air, in order to soften the metal. The formation of a bluish oxide on the surface is incidental.
