Deformation:

(english) A change in the shape of an object or material.

Autotrophic

(Environmental Engineering) Organisms which utilize inorganic carbon for synthesis of protoplasm. Ecologists narrow the definition further by requiring that autotrophs obtain their energy from the sun. In microbiologist parlance, this would be a photoautotroph. See photoautotrophic and chemoautotrophic.

Precast

(Concrete Engineering) A concrete unit, structure or member that is cast and cured in an area other than its final position or place.

Deoxygenation

(Environmental Engineering) The consumption of oxygen by the different aquatic organisms as they oxidized materials in the aquatic environment.

Ductility:

(english) Ductility generally refers to the amount of inelastic deformation which a material or structure experiences before complete failure. Quantitatively, ductility can be defined as the ratio of the total displacement or strain at failure, divided by the displacement or strain at the elastic limit.

Brine

(english) A saltwater solution for quenching or cooling when heat treating steel.

Internal force:

(english) Forces which hold an object together when external forces or other loads are applied. Internal forces are sometimes called resisting forces since they resist the effects of external forces.

Construction Joint

(Concrete Engineering) The contact between the placed concrete and concrete surfaces, against or upon which concrete is to be placed and to which new concrete is to adhere, that has become so rigid that the new concrete cannot be incorporated integrally by vibration with that previously placed. Unformed construction joints are horizontally placed or nearly so.

Composting

(Environmental Engineering) The controlled aerobic degradation of organic wastes into a material which can be used for landscaping, landfill cover, or soil conditioning.

Peeling

(Concrete Engineering) A process in which thin flakes of matrix or mortar are broken away from concrete surface; caused by adherence of surface mortar-to forms as forms are removed, or to trowel or float in portland cement plaster.

Blister

(english) 1) Coating defect consisting of the formation of bubbles in a coating, which appear as hemispherical elevations. The blisters are hollow, and are usually caused by entrapped air or solvent. 2) A raised spot on the surface on the surface of metal due to expansion of gas which causes a subsurface metal separation such as inclusions and small laminations.

Consistency

(Concrete Engineering) The degree of plasticity of fresh concrete or mortar The normal measure of consistency is slump for concrete and flow for mortar.
