Nitrification

(Environmental Engineering) The biological oxidation of ammonia and ammonium sequentially to nitrite and then nitrate. It occurs naturally in surface waters, and can be engineered in wastewater treatment systems. The purpose of nitrification in wastewater treatment systems is a reduction in the oxygen demand resulting from the ammonia.

Boil

(english) Agitation of a bath of metal caused by the liberation of a gas beneath its surface. May be deliberately induced by the addition of oxidizing material to a bath containing excess carbon. In the later case it is called a carbon boil and CO or CO2 are liberated.

In situ treatment

(Environmental Engineering) Treatment of a waste in place, as opposed to pumping or digging the waste up and then treating it.

Adapters

(english) Steel segments that are bolted to the reel mandrel to increase their diameter so that large (24" ID) coils can be run.

Composting

(Environmental Engineering) The controlled aerobic degradation of organic wastes into a material which can be used for landscaping, landfill cover, or soil conditioning.

Component (of a vector):

(english) Any vector can be expressed as a collection of vectors whose sum is equal to the original vector. Each vector in this collection is a component of the original vector. It is common to express a vector in terms of components which are parallel to the x and y axes.

Brazing

(english) Joining metals by fusion of nonferrous alloys that have melting points above 800 F (425C), but lower than those of the metals being joined. May be accomplished by a torch. Filler metal is ordinarily in rod form in torch brazing; whereas in furnace and dip brazing the work material is first assembled and the filler metal may then be applied as wire, washers, clips, bands, or may be bonded, as in brazing sheet.

Potential Energy:

(english) The energy stored in a raised object (e.g. the weights in a grandfather clock). Potential energy equals mgh, where m is mass, g is the acceleration of gravity, and h is the vertical distance from a reference location. It is called potential energy because the energy can be regained when the object is lowered. This type of potential energy is sometimes called gravitational potential energy in order to distinguish it from elastic potential energy: see elastic energy.

Bazooka

(english) Performs functions of Galvanneal Furnace; set of torches on wheels used to shoot flames onto a strip to further heat it.

Kelly Ball

(Concrete Engineering) A device for determining the consistency of fresh concrete. It is sometimes used as an alternative to the slump test.

Influent

(Environmental Engineering) The fluid entering a system, process, tank, etc. An effluent from one process can be an influent to another process. See effluent.

Bed-In

(english) Method whereby drag may be rammed in the pit or flask without necessity of rolling over. Process used in production of heavy castings.
