Hydrologic Cycle

(Concrete Engineering) The Hydrologic Cycle consists of the evaporation of water from oceans and other bodies of open water; condensation to produce cloud formations; precipitation of rain, snow, sleet or hail upon land surfaces; dissipation of rain or melted solids by direct run-off into lakes and by seepage into the soil. Thereby producing a continuing endless source of water in the sub-grade.

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)

(Environmental Engineering) The amount of oxygen required to oxidize any organic matter present in a water during a specified period of time, usually 5 days. It is an indirect measure of the amount of organic matter present in a water.

Effluent based standards

(Environmental Engineering) Standards which set concentration or mass per time limits on the effluent being discharged to a receiving water.

Boiler

(english) A closed vessel in which water, is transformed into steam at a given pressure and temperature under controlled conditions.

Burnt Rubber

(english) Small or large black spots that generally show up on surface and are generally caused by pickling steel too hot.

Backer (back-up plate)

(english) A “tool” or reinforcing part, which presses against the outer surface of an extrusion die, supporting it against the pressure of the extruding metal. The backer has an opening larger than the die aperture, allowing the extruded product to emerge without marring its soft surface.

(Environmental Engineering) (VS) is the amount of matter which volatilizes (or burns) when a water sample is heated to 550EC.Volatile suspended solids

Rebound

(Concrete Engineering) Wet shotcrete or sand and cement which bounces away from a surface again at which pneumatically applied mortar is being projected.

Abrasive Wear

(english) The displacement and / or detachment of metallic particles from a surface as a consequence of being exposed to flowing fluids or gases.

Condensation

(Concrete Engineering) When a moisture laden gas comes in contact with a cooler surface a change of state from gaseous to liquid occurs.
