Attached growth reactor

(Environmental Engineering) A reactor in which the microorganisms are attached to engineered surfaces within the reactor. Examples of attached growth reactors are the trickling filter and the rotating biological contactor. See suspended growth reactor.

Interface design

(Software Engineering) a software engineering action that establishes the structure and workflow for a user interface; follows three "golden rules:" place the user in control, reduce the user's memory leoad, make the interface consistent.

Block Off

(english) 1) Wooden separators which are used at both the bottom of a lift and between IPM's (bundles) of a lift. 2) The act of placing 4x4s between the lifts in the piler's box.

Water Vapor Pressure

(Concrete Engineering) The pressure exerted by water vapor. Air that contains higher amounts of water vapor exerts a higher vapor pressure than air which has a lower amount of has a higher water vapor pressure In concrete water vapor pressure is calculated by the difference between the vapor pressure of the concrete and the ambient relative humidity and temperature and in contact with the soil. that is calculated by; based upon relative humidity and temperature. The greater the difference between the water vapor and ambient humidity and temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit. the greater the water vapor pressure exerted.

Gravity:

(english) An attractive force between two objects; each object accelerates at a rate equal to the attractive force divided by the object's mass. Objects near the surface of the earth tend to accelerate toward the earth's center at a rate of ; this value is often called the gravitational constant and denoted as g.

Pumping (of Pavements)

(Concrete Engineering) The ejection of a mixture of water and solid materials such as clay or silt along cracks, transverse or longitudinal joints, and along pavement edges caused by downward slab movement due to the passage of heavy loads, machinery or equipment over the pavement after free water has accumulated in or on the subbase, subgrade or basecourse.

Ductility:

(english) Ductility generally refers to the amount of inelastic deformation which a material or structure experiences before complete failure. Quantitatively, ductility can be defined as the ratio of the total displacement or strain at failure, divided by the displacement or strain at the elastic limit.

Software engineering

(Software Engineering) a discipline that encompasses the process associated with software development, the methods used to analyze, design and test computer software, the management techniques associated with the control and monitoring of software projects and the tools used to support process, methods, and techniques.

Change of State

(Concrete Engineering) The process whereby liquid is heated to the point of evaporation changing the liquid into a gas the condensation of a gas on a cooler surface returning it from gaseous to liquid form.

Stability:

(english) Stability is best defined as the opposite of instability, which is the occurrence of large structural deformations which are not the result of material failure.

Burning 2

(english) Heating a metal beyond the temperature limits allowable for the desired heat treatment, or beyond the point where serious oxidation or other detrimental action begins.

Bandsaw

(english) A power saw, the blade of which is a continuous, narrow, steel band having teeth on one edge and passing over two large pulley wheels.
